Frequently Asked

Health & Safety

The safety and security of our travelers and tour staff are always our top priority. We have developed extensive policies and procedures for traveling during the pandemic in accordance with the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Safe Travels protocols.  We continue to monitor developments regarding COVID-19, using many information sources.  All trip participants (including staff) 12 years and older must show proof of having received a full dosage of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the start of the trip. Everyone will be asked to wear face coverings when required by local authorities, businesses, or site administrators. It is also strongly encouraged that face coverings be worn in crowded indoor settings such as airports and train terminals. Motorcoaches will be cleaned nightly, and all restaurants and sites will be screened to ensure that rigorous health and safety protocols are being followed.

If your child gets sick prior to departure, we would ask that you not join the group until the child has been cleared by a physician as not being contagious.  For this reason, we strongly recommend purchasing a trip insurance policy that would allow you to be reimbursed for trip cancellation or interruption due to sickness. See more information below about trip insurance.

Educational Experience

Trips are designed to feel like a vacation to your child, but hands-on learning opportunities are woven into every aspect of our itineraries. Using the destination as a living classroom, your child will gain a new appreciation of American history, natural history, and arts & culture through museum visits, performances, and culinary explorations.

Yes! Every American Girl Vacation includes at least one experience that highlights the featured doll’s character strength – be it charitable volunteerism, advocacy, or community-building. Explore each trip’s specific learning opportunities in the daily itinerary section of the trip’s web page.

We’ll make every effort to help your child develop their ability to interact as part of a group, make new friends in an unfamiliar setting, think critically, and take on new challenges.  Not unlike summer camp, your child will participate in games, arts & crafts, and outings led by an adult facilitator – but with you in the background for support and an enriched bonding experience.

This is not just a week-long trip. An American Girl Vacation will spark a lifetime of curiosity, tap into a child’s sense of adventure, and instill a love of experiential learning that travel so beautifully provides. We hope your child will catch the “travel bug” that will stay with them throughout their lifetime!

Yes!  Your vacation cost includes accommodations and porterage.  Tips for housekeeping staff are not included, however.

Yes! Gratuities to local guides, restaurant staff, bell staff, and drivers are all included in the trip price. Activity Coordinators never expect and will not accept tips. The only time tips are not included is during free time and meals on your own.

Airfare to and from the starting and ending point of each American Girl Vacation is not included in the price in order to give you maximum flexibility in choosing your preferences for air travel. This way, you can use frequent flier upgrades, depart from your airport of choice, or add pre- and post-trip extensions with no constraints. Please refrain from booking your airfare until our team reaches out to confirm your departure.

Trip Details

We might have dreamed up these trips with your girls aged 7-12 in mind, but a week of learning, making friends, and character-building is gender neutral! All children—whether or not they love an American Girl doll—are all welcome to join.

We keep each American Girl Vacation between 15 to 25 people max, generally between 6 to 10 family units—not so many that you won’t forget names, but there are still plenty of friends to make!

Yes! As long as every child is under the responsibility of an accompanying adult, non-family friends are welcome.  Minors traveling without their legal parent/guardian will need to submit a notarized consent form signed by their legal guardian. Each room can accommodate up to three or four travelers, and we can provide pricing accordingly. Each hotel room must be occupied by at least one adult over the age of 18.

Just as all children must travel with an adult, all adults must also travel with a child.

If your child has the American Girl doll featured on the trip, by all means, bring her along! She may want to see the sights, and the itinerary will include plenty of opportunities for her to join in the fun. If your child doesn’t have the doll – or any American Girl dolls –  don’t worry! We care most that YOU both are there. We’ll send a detailed packing list so you know what you’ll need long before departure.

Restaurants for group meals are chosen with our target audience in mind — nothing too adventurous for young palates.  If there are food allergies or dietary restrictions, they will be accommodated. That said, if your child has a preference that is not a medical requirement, please plan to bring your own snacks to supplement meals. Also note that in the spirit of vacation, some of our treats are more “sugar forward” than on a typical day.

Once you’ve made a reservation, we will send plenty of information including suggested items to pack.

Leisure & Activities

The typical day would not start before 9am and not end after 9PM, although there may be some exceptions for special events.  We understand the need for rest and pacing, so if there is a 12-hour day planned, we’ll be sure to incorporate quiet down-time. If there is a night performance scheduled, we will automatically have a later start-time the next day. If a child needs to take a break during the day’s activities, it will be up to the parent/guardian to escort the child back to the hotel – together with all other children in their care – and rejoin when the child is ready to return.  We will be unable to give refunds for missed activities, and transportation for unscheduled rest-time is the parent/guardian’s responsibility.

Each American Girl Vacation will include at least one optional “kids-only” event which will be supervised by our Activities Coordinators at a ratio of child to adult of 1:10. Our Activities Coordinators have First Aid and CPR training and have clear background checks.

American Girl Vacations are carefully curated—meaning we work with our partners to get you and your family exclusive access to behind-the-scenes, un-shoppable experiences. For this reason, these trips generally do not incorporate long periods of free time during the day, although night times and some meals will be at your leisure.

Generally, there is a good deal of walking on our Vacations – about 2 miles per day on average.  Our Activity Coordinators will give frequent reminders about traveling safely as a group on foot, and parents/guardians will be asked to keep a close eye on their children. Activity Coordinators will be at the front and back of the group to make sure that no one wanders off.

Reservations & Cancellation

You can reserve your spot on a trip either online or over the phone. A deposit of $500 per person is all that’s required to complete a reservation.

Yes, absolutely! If you wish to arrive early at the first hotel on the itinerary or stay on at the last hotel, our team will be happy to facilitate the reservation of extra nights. Additional nights will be added to your AG Vacation invoice and will be subject to the same Terms and Conditions of your main trip.

After you reserve your trip and pay your deposit, we will send you detailed information to help you prepare—your itinerary, destination details, insurance information, what to pack, an invoice, a Participant Information Form, and other related items. After a minimum of 10 travelers are enrolled on your departure, our team will reach out to let you know it’s time to book your flights. Final trip details are sent roughly 2-3 weeks before departure.

We currently have a flexible booking policy in place that allows you to cancel and receive a full refund up to 60 days prior to your scheduled departure. As always, you have the option to transfer your full deposit to a new departure. There is no refund for cancellations within 60 days of departure.

We highly recommend that you purchase trip insurance to protect your investment. Unexpected cancellations happen more than anyone imagines, and insurance is the best way to guard against losses. We recommend using our partner insurance provider, Travel Insurance Services, which offers three different policies for you to choose from.
